The Chicago Bears have gone through the first two weeks of camp with building expectations around Luther Burden. The pass catcher's injury was the only thing that could've possibly dampened spirits, as there is a growing belief that the receiver is going to be Caleb Williams' primary target at the position. However, there is reason to pump the brakes a bit on this belief, not only based on Burden's injury, but also on how well Rome Odunze has played in the first days of camp, reminding fans of the fact he was expected to take on the same role not long ago.
Odunze added to a long list of camp highlights with Bears pundit Adam Hoge noting, "Practice ends with a great throw from Caleb Williams to Rome Odunze under the goal post for a walk-off TD. Catch was probably even better than the throw." Odunze has made highlight plays throughout camp that serve as a reminder of the elite potential that has the Bears looking at a WR1 competition that is a bit closer than first expected.
This is in no way to underrate the potential of Burden or overlook the clear signs he could be getting ready for a breakout season. The point is to appreciate Odunze's clear talent and the fact that the receiver has shown himself fully healthy and reminded fans and pundits just how high of a ceiling he can have when healthy and given the opportunity.
Bears Have an Exciting Problem as Rome Odunze is Making Undeniable Case as WR1
Odunze has produced 1,395 receiving yards in his first 29 games to go along with nine touchdowns and a number of big moments. To put it simply, Odunze was drafted to be a primary weapon and could just now be realizing this potential as the Bears will be forced to give the receiver more opportunities based on the clear caution needed around Burden.
Even prior to the injury there was reason for a healthy debate as to whether or not the Bears could have a competition on their hands deciding the primary target. The departure of DJ Moore has opened up a considerable number of targets, and both players stand to benefit.
However, there can only be one pass catcher who wins the role of being the most trusted target at the position. While it is easy to argue this could be Colston Loveland when including the tight end position as well, both receivers have every reason to believe they are capable of holding down the role.
Odunze has simply spent the first two weeks reminding fans of this and proving he is healthy and could be setting up for a breakout season.
