Surprise Bulls Free Agent May Not Be Leaving After All
By Jovan Alford
The Chicago Bulls are in the process of shaking up their roster after trading defensive-minded guard Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Josh Giddey. With Caruso on the move, many people expect Zach LaVine to be traded next, and other various roster decisions.
The Bulls have a ton on their plate over the next couple of weeks that it must address, which includes free agency. Chicago isn’t linked to many free agents, but they could be looking to bring back a valued member from this season’s squad.
Michael A. Scotto of HoopsHype.com reported Monday the Bulls would like to re-sign veteran center Andre Drummond.
The 30-year-old Drummond is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after being mentioned in trade rumors at the trade deadline earlier this year. This latest report is shocking given that Joe Crowley of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote earlier this month that there was an “expected vacancy of Andre Drummond” when discussing the Bulls’ offseason plans.
Drummond is coming off a solid 2023-24 campaign with the Bulls, recording 8.4 points and 9.0 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game. The veteran center didn’t put up earth-shattering numbers, but he was good enough to the point where he could have multiple suitors in free agency.
If the Bulls opted against re-signing Drummond, they could turn to 22-year-old Adama Sanogo, who played nine games in the NBA but spent most of his time in the NBA G League. However, the Bulls would be asking a lot of Sanogo to fill the void of Drummond, who has made a career for himself as one of the best rebounders in the league.
With NBA free agency on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if the Bulls go after Drummond, or if another team like the Los Angeles Lakers or Philadelphia 76ers will sign him.
