Latest Bears Injury Update Great Sign Ahead of Preseason Week 2
Over the past two seasons, injuries during training camp have become a concern for the Chicago Bears. While no player has suffered a season-ending injury during camp, the extended time missed by select starters was worrisome. The more practice time a player misses during camp, the less physically prepared they may be for the first few weeks of the season.
Being physically prepared for the first few weeks of the season this year is especially important because the Bears need to get off to a hot start with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. However, they had major pieces like right guard Nate Davis, nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon, second-year cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, and defensive end Montez Sweat missing the last couple of weeks of practice.
While Sweat’s absence isn't a major concern since he's a proven player, it’s vital for the others to be on the field and practicing.
Fortunately, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, all of these players returned to practice in some capacity on Wednesday.
Bears News: Chicago Trending in Right Direction With Injuries
Davis's return to practice is the most significant given his history with the Bears. Last season, after signing, Davis missed most of training camp with personal issues, which was later learned to be a death in the family. While that is an understandable reason to miss practice, Davis didn't play well last season.
Coming into this year's training camp, there was hope that Davis would be a consistent participant. Although injuries have prevented that so far, now that he's back, it's crucial for him to put together a string of consistent practices to solidify his role as the starter.
On the other side of the ball, the return of Stevenson and Gordon means the secondary is now 95% healthy. The only player still awaiting a return is safety Jaquan Brisker. Even at 95% strength, this allows a secondary that showed promise at the end of last season to continue building cohesion. Hopefully, Brisker returns soon, and the unit remains healthy for the rest of training camp.
If that happens, look out for the Bears' defense in Week 1 against the Titans.
