Former Packer is Perfect Free Agent Target for Bears After Release
By Cem Yolbulan
The Chicago Bears have plenty of needs they need to address in the offseason. The quarterback question has been on everyone's mind and that one is a no-brainer with USC's Caleb Williams widely expected to be the signal-caller in Chicago. However, the Bears have equally pressing needs in other positions as well. One of them is the wide receiver corps.
DJ Moore has proven himself to be a star receiver as he finished 2023 with 96 receptions and 1,364 yards. However, outside of him, the receiver rotation in Chicago leaves plenty to be desired.
Fortunately for the Bears, an ideal free-agent target just became available to address their need.
Bears Have The Perfect WR Target After Chiefs Release
In a cost-cutting move, the Kansas City Chiefs released Marquez Valdes-Scantling on Wednesday. This move saves the Chiefs $12 million for next season. Even though MVS had a down season in 2023, he was a key contributor in the postseason with a game-clinching catch in the AFC Championship game and a touchdown in the Super Bowl.
Valdes-Scantling is an excellent fit for the Bears because of this playmaking ability. He can spread the field with his speed and open things up for the Chicago offense. This will especially be helpful with a rookie quarterback at the helm. He has consistently been one of the best deep-threat options in the NFL, averaging 17 yards per reception. In 2020, he averaged 20.9 yards per reception playing with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
MVS finished 2023 with 21 receptions and 315 yards. He brings a ton of postseason experience playing with both Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. At age 29, he can still make an impact in a limited role, and unlike other high-end offensive weapons, he would come cheaper.
The Chicago Bears are considered a long shot (+2200) to win the NFC next season. They need to nail their offseason decisions to give themselves a chance, and that starts with free agency.
