Failed Bears Quarterback Somehow Lands New NFL Contract
The Chicago Bears have rostered dozens of quarterbacks throughout the franchise's history. While some former Bears gunslingers provided the fanbase with a plethora of good memories, others had fans praying for them to get out of town as soon as possible.
When it comes to quarterbacks who fit into the latter category, Nathan Peterman certainly fits the bill. The Jacksonville, FL native spent parts of the last two seasons in the Windy City, doing nothing but frustrate fans whenever the ball was in his hands. It got to the point where Bears supporters wondered if he even belonged in the NFL.
But even though Peterman doesn't look like he belongs in the league, that didn't stop one franchise from giving him another contract.
Bears News: Raiders Sign QB Nathan Peterman
NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Las Vegas Raiders have signed Peterman to a contract. The 30-year-old QB was previously with the Raiders from 2018 to 2021, however, that was before the current management/coaching regime.
It's tough to imagine Peterman being anything but a warm training camp body at this point. The Raiders already have Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew as their top QB options with up-and-comers Anthony Brown Jr. and Carter Bradley also waiting in the wings.
After failed stints with the Buffalo Bills and Raiders, Peterman joined the Bears ahead of the 2022 NFL season. Although he spent the majority of the year on the practice squad, he was named the team's starting QB for a Week 18 meeting with the Minnesota Vikings. As expected, Peterman was underwhelming as he only completed 57.9% of passes for 114 yards with one TD in a 29-13 loss.
But despite the lackluster results, the Bears re-signed Peterman to a one-year contract last offseason. He spent the year on Chicago's practice squad before joining the New Orleans Saints once the 2024 free agency period began. The Saints then released him five months later, allowing him to make the aforementioned deal with the Raiders.
We'll see if the move to Sin City helps, although I doubt it. A quick look at his stats reveals that Peterman is not an NFL quarterback. It usually isn't a good thing when a QB has nearly three teams as many interceptions (13) as he does career starts (5). That's without mentioning how his career passer rating of 39.4 is worse than if he threw the ball into the ground on every play (39.6).
Based on how his career has developed, I doubt we'll see Peterman accomplish much with the Raiders. He just isn't good enough to start each week nor does he make for a reliable backup option. It's more likely that he'll either spend the season on the practice squad or in the unemployment line.
