Lost in the shuffle of what was a crazy Wednesday for the Chicago Bears was the fact that the team announced yesterday afternoon that veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman was released.

On the surface, the release did not make too much sense.

On the heels of Fields admitting to reporters that he was playing too robotic while placing the blame both on himself and the coaching staff, the idea of the Bears releasing Peterman seemed to be a reaction to their starting quarterback’s comments. Especially when you consider that Fields has gone out of his way throughout the offseason to speak on the value that Peterman brings to the quarterback room.

Well, it would appear that speculation was all for naught.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported on Thursday that Peterman has been re-signed to the Bears 53-man roster.

Peterman had served as the primary backup to Fields in each of the first two games of the regular season with undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent begin inactive for each of those games.

As an important reminder, with the Bears presumably moving forward with carrying three quarterbacks, the third quarterback on the depth chart can be marked as inactive on game day but would have the ability to enter the game in the event that the first-string quarterback and second-string quarterback get injured. If that occurs, neither of the first two quarterbacks on the depth would be eligible to return to the game.

Bears’ offensive coordinator Luke Getsy will meet with reporters on Thursday afternoon at Halas Hall and while the focus will be on the comments that Fields made yesterday, there likely will be a question regarding the release and consequent re-signing of Peterman.
