Cubs Named Best Fit For Star First Baseman
The Chicago Cubs started the season neck and neck with the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central, but since the middle of May, they have struggled to be consistent.
The Cubs are in fourth place with a 33-36 record, putting them 7.5 games out of first place. Chicago's struggles aren't only on the pitching like they were at the start of the season, but their hitting has also been bad.
If the Cubs are serious about getting back in the playoff race, they must make moves before the trade deadline on July 30th. One player rumored to be on the trading block is New York Mets first basemen Pete Alonso. According to Bleacher Report, the Chicago Cubs are the best fit for a Pete Alonso trade.
Projected Pete Alonso Trade Sends Star 1B to Cubs
Alonso definitely has the name value to warrant trade talks. Since joining the big leagues in 2019, he has won three Home Run Derbies (2019, 2022, and 2023), made the MLB All-Star Game three times, and was the rookie of the year in 2019. His consistent play has been one of the only positive things happening for the Mets organization.
In 267 at-bats this season, Alonso has 60 hits ( 30 singles, 16 doubles, and 14 home runs), 26 walks, 59 strikeouts, 32 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .315.
Although current Cubs' first baseman Michael Busch's stats are technically better than Alonso's right now, it's an unfair comparison since Busch has 77 fewer at-bats than Alonso. Nevertheless, the impact Alonso would have on the Cubs' batting order wouldn't be denied.
Although Alonso is 29 years old, getting a player of his caliber should require some major movement of resources. However, Bleacher Report projects a team-friendly deal for Alonso.
Even though Alonso's contract is up at the end of this season, this deal seems too little to acquire him. The Cubs would likely try to re-sign Alonso even though he would be 30 next season. If this is truly, how much the Mets would want for Alonso, then the Cubs should absolutely trade for him.
