Caleb Williams' Struggles Worsen in Latest Bears Practice
Growing pains are a part of being a young quarterback and Caleb Williams is learning that the hard way. The Chicago Bears franchise quarterback had a rough go during Wednesday's training camp session as the first-team offense struggled to move the ball and even went three-and-out during a two-minute drill.
But that was just one practice and the Bears still had a few days left before their upcoming preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. Hopeful fans chalked things up to Williams having a bad day, leaving them to hope that things would be better on Thursday.
Unfortunately, that was anything but the case.
Bears News: Caleb Williams' Practice Struggles Continue
Thursday's practice didn't go much better than the day before for Williams. If anything, it went worse.
NBC Sports' Josh Schrock is reporting that Williams' latest underwhelming showing involved several blunders, including two interceptions. He also threw several incomplete passes and was even sacked by defensive end Dominique Robinson at one point.
Williams' struggles come on the same day that the Bears revealed that the 2024 No. 1 draft pick would be starting against the Bills during Saturday's preseason contest. It was rumored last month that the Bears wanted to give Williams "40-45" preseason reps, leaving time to tell if that's still the case.
Having said that, there likely aren't any reasons to hit the panic button just yet. While practice is useful in helping evaluate players and where they fit in the lineup, nobody should consider calling Williams a bust just because had a couple of poor training camp sessions.
The important thing is that the 22-year-old has the support of his teammates. Veteran tight end Mercedes Lewis — who's played with dozens of QBs across his 18-year career — is confident that Williams will bounce back with time.
"Obviously, with a young quarterback, we’re going to have those moments," Lewis said about Williams' struggles. "Not every day is going to be beautiful out there, but if you keep working through it come September we will be just fine. We got plenty of time."
Even linebacker Tremaine Edmunds went as far as calling Williams "special" and that he's "definitely set up to do good things."
It's hard to disagree with Edmunds here. Williams has all the tools to be an NFL superstar after racking up over 10,000 passing yards, 93 touchdowns, and the 2022 Heisman Trophy during his three-year collegiate run split between Oklahoma and USC. He now arrives in the NFL with a collection of weapons that features the likes of DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet, Rome Odunze, and more.
Even oddsmakers are confident in the former Trojans' outlook. Williams is currently FanDuel Sportsbook's lopsided +140 favorite to be named the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
