Caleb Williams Concerns Grow After Latest Bears Practice
By Cem Yolbulan
Bears fans are understandably excited about the 2024 NFL season with their star rookie Caleb Williams under center. This is arguably the most optimistic the vibes in Chicago have been over the last couple of years. The latest reports out of the ongoing training camp, however, raised some concerns with only a month left before Week 1.
Chicago's offense has been struggling throughout the training camp. Injuries to the offensive line, new additions, and a lack of overall continuity have been blamed for this. Yet, these struggles continuing deep into training camp are not a good sign for a team with postseason aspirations. According to Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Chicago, Wednesday's padded practice was the worst the Bears' first-team offense has looked.
"Wednesday's padded affair at Halas Hall might have been the low point of training camp for Williams and the first-team offense...the Bears' offense barely moved the ball in multiple team periods. "
- Josh Schrock, NBC Sports Chicago
Schrock detailed the issues Caleb Williams and the offense had on Wednesday. Even without Montez Sweat and defensive tackle Andrew Billings, the defensive line got "constant pressure" on Williams. DeMarcus Walker got a sack on Williams, who completed just two passes during 11-on-11 drills.
Head coach Matt Eberflus and offensive coordinator Shane Waldron have a tough decision to make. They initially wanted to give Williams about 45-to-55 preseason reps before Week 1, but it was reported that they don't want to risk throwing him out there if the offensive line is not healthy.
Yet, it's clear that Williams needs as many reps as he can get to build a connection with his teammates. Finding the right balance between making sure Williams is healthy on Week 1 and building continuity will be a massive decision for the Bears' top brass.
The Bears are facing the Buffalo Bills on Saturday for their first official preseason game. If he suits up, all eyes will be on Caleb Williams and his chemistry with his teammates.
