Bears Working Out Potential Last-Minute Signing Before Camp
By Cem Yolbulan
The Chicago Bears have kicked off their training camp on Tuesday at Halas Hall with the rookies having reported. On Friday, the veterans will join the rest of the team and the first team practice will take place on July 20.
Yet, the Bears are not done building out the training camp roster. Before finalizing the 90-man roster, Chicago is working out a veteran free agent to bolster their defensive line. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bears have former Jaguars defender Shaquille Quarterman working out for them on Thursday.
Bears News: Chicago Works Out LB Shaquille Quarterman
Quarterman was Jacksonville's fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and just finished his rookie contract without missing a game in the last three seasons. He was mostly used as a special teamer, playing over 50% of special teams snaps in each of his four seasons. He only played a combined 29 defensive snaps in the last two seasons.
The 26-year-old former Miami product would most likely be used as a special teams player for the Bears as well. Chicago currently has one spot available for their training camp roster and Quarterman is as good of a candidate as any to take that spot.
In his final college season, Quarterman had registered 107 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble. His defensive abilities weren't needed in the NFL so far but if the Bears see untapped potential there, he could be a depth option next season.
Chicago is currently projected to start Tremaine Edmunds, TJ Edwards, and Jack Sanborn in their base defensive lineup with Daniel Hardy, Micah Baskerville, and Noah Sewell as backup options. Whether Quarterman can make a case to beat out any of these defenders remains to be seen.
