Bears Make Huge Coaching Staff Shakeup Days After Season Ends
One of the biggest immediate offseason storylines surrounding the Chicago Bears is the uncertainty regarding their coaching staff. Matt Eberflus' job is by no means safe following two losing seasons to begin his tenure, which puts pressure on him to show the front office he should stay.
Well, it appears Eberflus is attempting to do that by making a major shakeup to his staff.
Bears News: Luke Getsy Fired
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday morning that offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has been fired. That's not all, however, as all of Getsy's staff has been canned as well.
This is kind of core-changing move Eberflus had to make if he was going to stick around. It allows him to pin some of the team's struggles on one of his assistants and buy himself another year to prove he's the man to lead this squad back to the playoffs.
Getsy is far from just a fall man here, though. He put himself right in the crosshairs with a very underwhelming showing in his first OC gig. His Chicago offenses never ranked higher than 20th in total yards and 18th in points.
Most notable was the Bears' immense struggles in the passing game, which Getsy was supposed to help improve after serving as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Instead, Chicago was dead-last in yards through the air in 2022 and No. 27 this past season. This unit also took a step back in passing TDs, going from No. 19 in 2022 to No. 23 in 2023.
This firing doesn't take the pressure off of Eberflus, however. If anything, this moves him closer to the chopping block if he can't turn around this offense fast.
