Bears Bring Back Playmaker With Caleb Williams Ties Before Week 3
By Cem Yolbulan
While Caleb Williams is trying to find his footing in the NFL, the Chicago Bears are doing their best to make him comfortable. They already added more weapons offensively in the offseason, and are now bringing in his former college teammates.
According to Bears insider Brad Biggs, Chicago signed wide receiver John Jackson to the practice squad. The undrafted free agent rookie spent the offseason and preseason with the team before being released. Now, he gets another chance after the roster spot of Jamree Kromah opened up when he signed with the Patriots.
NFL News: Bears Sign WR John Jackson
Jackson played for the University of Southern California between 2019 and 2022. He was with Caleb Williams for the 2022 season before transferring to Nevada for his fifth year. After leaving USC, he had called Caleb Williams his "best friend". Jackson's father not only played football and baseball at USC in the 1980s, but he also had a stint with the Chicago Bears in 1996. So, Jackson III is not too unfamiliar with the organization he is re-joining.
At Nevada, Jackson had a much larger role on offense, having a career-best 35 catches and 267 yards. Before that, he was used almost exclusively on special teams for the Trojans.
The Bears have two more wide receivers on the practice squad, Collin Johnson and Samori Toure. Jackson has an uphill battle to be elevated to the active roster at any point in the season.
Chicago is currently dealing with injuries to Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze. If they end up missing the Week 3 matchup against the Colts, we may see one of the receivers on the practice squad get a chance as soon as this Sunday.
