6 Bears Who Won't Survive the Preseason
Two preseason games are already in the books for the Chicago Bears as the team played in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton and followed that with a road trip to Buffalo to take on the Bills. The road trip to Buffalo provided us with the NFL debut of No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, who did his part to dazzle Bears fans and continue to rev up the engine on the hype train.
At this point, it's more of a runaway locomotive.
The Bears are getting a good, clean evaluation on their roster with the rare fourth preseason game this year, and after two games, we've already got a good beat on which players may not be surviving the preseason as it relates to their roster chances.
Which Bears players could be on the way out before the season starts?
1. Austin Reed, Quarterback
We all saw how well Brett Rypien played in the Hall of Fame Game for the Bears, and that might end up being bad news for young Austin Reed, who is in Chicago as an undrafted sleeper competing for a job either with the Bears or somewhere else in the NFL.
Reed might be more likely to land a practice squad job in Chicago at this point but you can tell the Bears are trying to get a better look at him.
Rypien only threw two passes in this game for Chicago compared to four for Reed, so maybe Matt Eberflus and his staff wanted to get a little more on tape for the rookie.
Not only that, but the Bears were getting reps for Williams and Tyson Bagent, so it was a pretty limited day for all of the quarterbacks. Maybe the reps in this game vs. the Bills weren't anything to read into, but Rypien has a history of starting games in the league and can serve as a veteran voice in that room.
