6 Bears Who Could Be Cut Before Playing a Snap

4. Freddie Swain, Wide Receiver
Chicago made sure to fix their receiving corps this offseason — after starting their much-needed rebuild in 2023.
In the same trade that landed them the No. 1 pick which was used on Caleb Williams, the Bears added D.J. Moore (yes, they fleeced the Carolina Panthers). In his first season in Chicago, Moore had career highs in receptions (96), yardage (1,364), and touchdowns (8). That led to him recently signing a four-year, $110 million contract extension which included more than $82 million in guaranteed money.
Looking ahead to 2024, Moore will continue to be the top wideout but he has more help than he's had either in Chicago or Carolina. The Bears traded for Keenan Allen and selected Rome Odunze at No. 9 overall. That gives Williams several options but leaves very little room for any wideouts to make the team.
Behind their top trio, there's Tyler Scott, Velus Jones, Jr., DeAndre Carter, Collin Johnson, Dante Pettis, and Freddie Swain fighting for three spots. Swain was a sixth-round pick in 2020 out of Florida who has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins. He had a strong campaign in 2021 with 343 yards and four touchdowns on 225 receptions.
Since then, he's been very quiet and hardly made any impact during the Hall of Fame Game. Swain had three targets and caught two for five yards. It wasn't an encouraging night and while he has experience as a returner, even that won't help him since nearly every other backup receiver does as well.
