3 Takeaways From the Hall of Fame Game
3. Passive Defense
There's no need to press the panic button quite yet, but it is worth mentioning that the Bears' defense was very passive. Although it's not uncommon for teams to play vanilla defense in the preseason there were lots of holes in the Bears' defense throughout the game. Lots of holes were in the flats which left running backs wide open for checkdowns. On many of these checkdowns, running backs would gain anywhere from five to nine yards.
Outside of the wide-open flat areas of the field, many of the Bears' defenders didn't seem to be attacking the ball. Texans quarterbacks Davis Mills and Case Keenum combined for 17 completions out of 22 passes, 180 passing yards, and two passing touchdowns. Although both quarterbacks have starting experience in the NFL, it would have been nice to see the backups play more aggressively.
Going forward, the Bears don't have to worry about putting plays on film for an opponent in the regular season. Hopefully, this benefits the defense, allowing them to play tighter coverage for the rest of the preseason.
