3 Biggest Takeaways From Bears’ Week 1 Win Over the Titans
2. Offensive struggles on third downs
As mentioned earlier, the Bears' offense, led by Caleb Williams, struggled to move the ball. So, it's no surprise they had trouble converting third downs. The Bears offense finished the day 2/13 on third downs.
In his debut, Williams faced six 3rd downs of six yards or more and converted one of them with his legs. While it's nice to see that Williams can get the team out of bad situations with his legs succeeding on third and longs pretty rare for a rookie to do right away.
The more worrying statistic is the Bears went one for seven on 3rd & 5 or shorter. Of those seven third-down attempts, the Bears threw the ball six times and ran it once. Their single rush attempt on a third down came on a 3rd & 1, which they failed to convert. That's a problem, even though the Titans have a good interior defensive line. Getting a yard on third down from the run game should be a no-doubt play.
The third-down failures that happened on pass plays were mostly bad throws from Williams or drops by the receiver. Although Williams had a bad third-down efficiency in his first start, he has plenty of time to make up for it.
