3 Bears Who Won't Survive the Season in Chicago
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles has been one of the most aggressive executives in the league since taking the job in Chicago, and the Bears have proven they will spare no expense to get this team back into contention in the NFC North.
Because of that combination of Poles and his aggressiveness along with the organization's desire to win, players are going to be on the chopping block all throughout the season even though they may have made the initial 53-man roster. There are a handful of players right now on the Bears who might be on the roster now, but also not for long.
As the season progresses, which Bears players could be first up on the chopping block?
1. Khalil Herbert, running back
I realize the Bears quite like Khalil Herbert, and we didn't see a ton from Roschon Johnson in the preseason to just send Herbert packing at the first opportunity, but the regular season might be a different beast entirely.
The Bears are obviously planning on featuring D'Andre Swift at the running back position this season and the presence of players like Herbert and Johnson on the roster gives them some nice depth to lean on as needed.
As the season progresses, however, we're going to have to monitor the usage of Velus Jones Jr., who made a position switch this year to running back and offers positional flexibility and outstanding kickoff return/punt return abilities to the Bears. Would it be shocking at some point this year if the Bears decide that they are fine with giving out carries to primarily Swift, Johnson, and Jones?
Not at all.
Herbert is also in a contract year and might have a better chance to get himself a pay day elsewhere. There's obviously still a chance that the Bears will roll with Herbert as their RB2 this year and maybe he will get more carries than I am anticipating, but his name is one to watch for.
