Possible Early Favorite for Bears Job Hinted at in Latest Rumor
The 2024 season hasn't gone as anticipated for the Chicago Bears. Week 15 is here but Chicago is 4-9 on the campaign, including a seven-game losing streak.
Following the embarrassing loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day, Chicago parted ways with Matt Eberflus. Thomas Brown was named the interim coach but the results didn't change on the field. The Bears came out flat last week and lost to the San Francisco 49ers 38-13.
Chicago will be hiring a new head coach this offseason and there are early rumblings on potential candidates.
Bears News: A Coaching Candidate is Being Named to Chicago
ESPN's Dan Graziano was discussing the opening in Chicago and acknowledged that the Bears are expected to go after Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
"I still expect the Bears to take a run at Johnson, and it's possible they could get him. I believe Johnson will be a hot candidate, but Williams should be a draw for any creative offensive mind."
- Dan Graziano
Johnson's name has been atop the coaching cycle for the past two years. Last offseason, he decided not to take any of the openings and headed back to Detroit. It looks like that was a smart decision, as the Lions' offense has looked unstoppable once again this season.
This season, Detroit ranks second in total offense (394.8) but fourth in both pass offense (243.9) and rush offense (151.1). Furthermore, they are first in points per game (32.1).
The Bears badly need a coach with offensive creativity and a person who will get the most out of Caleb Williams.
Chicago's offense has been wildly underwhelming considering all the talent they have. They are last in the NFL in total offense (290), 30th in pass offense (182.7), and 24th in scoring offense (19.5).
The Bears need a new voice to lead this organization and they already have their eyes on Johnson.
