Pete Crow-Armstrong has become the very first Cubs player to ever hit 40-40! This guy knows how to play baseball. 40+ home runs in a season and 40 stolen bases in the same season! It's been a wild season to watch, but somehow PCA has gotten even more impressive every step of the way. He exceeded 40 home runs back on September 7th, when he drilled his 40th dinger against the Miami Marlins back on September 6th.
At the time of this writing, PCA has already hit 45 home runs. It was only a matter of time before he reached 40 stolen bases. Pete entered the Cubs' final home game against the Marlins with 39.
PCA joins some of baseball’s biggest names
It was the bottom of the first inning on Thursday when PCA drew the walk to start the Cubs off. He wasted no time by taking off on the very first pitch. With the throw offline, he earned himself yet another standing ovation from Wrigley Field, and joined a club of elite ball player. PCA has been one of the most electric players in baseball this season, very likely earning himself the National League MVP award in the process.
PCA becomes only one of seven players ever to reach this feat, joining the likes of Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Alfonso Soriano.
In an odd piece of trivia, Marlins pitcher Tyler Phillips happened to be on the mound for both PCA's 40th home run in Miami, and on the mound for his 40th stolen base at Wrigley. The chances of that happening must be incredibly small.
Crow-Armstrong has spent the season making the extraordinary look routine, but this milestone deserves a pause. No Cubs player has ever paired 40 home runs with 40 stolen bases until he took second on Thursday. Whether or not the MVP award follows, this season put together by Pete has a place in Cubs history.
