New year, same old Chicago Bears. We're two weeks into the Ben Johnson experiment, and while there have been some encouraging flashes, he's learning the hard way that there's much more to being a head coach.
Defensive miscues, head-scratching decisions, questionable play-calling, and discouraging quarterback play have hurt this team again this season. If it sounds familiar, that's because it's the same old story.
With that in mind, the Bears might want to reconsider their approach to this season. If the losses keep mounting up, they should look to move on from their veterans and give the youngsters a chance to shine.
Bears Should Consider Trading D.J. Moore
The Bears acquired D.J. Moore in the same trade that got them Caleb Williams. They sent the 2023 No. 1 pick to the Carolina Panthers in return for Moore, the 2024 No. 1 pick, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2025 second-round selection.
He's clearly the most polished offensive player on the roster, but with a promising rookie in Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze looking like a breakout candidate, they might want to get the most out of his contract while his trade value is still high and then turn to the young players.
The Bears entered the season with high hopes and expectations, but it's hard to overcome a 0-2 start to the season, especially in what might be the most competitive division in all of football.
More than that, they haven't shown anything that could make the fans or the front office think that they're just a couple of tweaks away from getting their act together and becoming the explosive offensive team most fans and analysts thought they would be.
Moore is signed through the 2029 season, but he has a potential out in his contract after the 2027 campaign. He's a strong, big-bodied wideout who can also beat defenders with his speed and get some designed touches out of the backfield.
So far, he's totalled eight catches for 114 receiving yards through two games, so this decision wouldn't have anything to do with his talent, production, or impact. If anything, his numbers should help drive his trade value up.
Still, this team has a surplus of young talent, and if they're not going to compete for a playoff spot, they might as well use this as a developmental season to establish and embrace a new offensive system and get the youngsters going.
