The Chicago Bears defense is looking to bounce back in 2025 after it collapsed in on itself in the second half of 2024. New defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is already making noise in training camp with all the pressure he is bringing. Fortunately, Allen doesn't need to rely on pressure, as Chicago has a strong secondary led by cornerback Jaylon Johnson.

Johnson, however, has been sidelined due to an injury for the Bears' first seven training camp practices. As a result, Chicago has been rotating multiple cornerbacks in with the first team.

That said, following Wednesday's practice, Allen was asked if there was a leader for the CB2 job. He said," I think it's completely open. That's how you build the best defense." For many Bears fans, this may come as a surprise.

Most Bears fans likely expected third-year corner Tyrique Stevenson to hold that job. Though Stevenson made a huge mistake last season, when he was talking to the fans instead of paying attention to the game, he still has plenty of talent. With defensive backs coach Al Harris taking over, Bears fans figured he would straighten Stevenson out.

Over the past few years, Harris helped elevate the Dallas Cowboys' cornerback room into one of the best units in the NFL. His tough, no-nonsense coaching style is exactly what many believe Stevenson needs to reach his full potential.

Nevertheless, it seems Allen isn't fully convinced in the 25-year-old's talent. Behind Stevenson, Chicago has Terell Smith, Nahshon Wright, and rookie Zah Frazier. So far, Wright has made the most noise in camp.

There have been multiple reports that the 26-year-old has made impressive pass breakups in practice. Furthermore, he has a history with Harris in Dallas. Wright spent three seasons with the Cowboys after being a third-round pick for them in 2021. Though he struggled, his familiarity with Harris provides a leg up in the competition.

Still, it would be surprising if Stevenson wasn't the cornerback opposite of Jaylon Johnson in Week 1. Nonetheless, monitoring who continues to play well during Johnson's absence will provide the best insight into who will start next to him.
