New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson had to talk Case Keenum out of retirement to get the veteran to join the roster. It seemed Keenum was content to walk away before Johnson's vision sold the veteran on the historic franchise. It is just a small piece of what has Bears fans so excited and once again believing in the direction of the organization. For Keenum, the quarterback wasted no time making an early impression.

The veteran made an appearance in the first preseason game along with Austin Reed and Tyson Bagent. Chicago was content allowing Caleb Williams to sit this one out, valuing the health of the franchise quarterback over early reps. It served as an opportunity for Keenum, who went 8/10, throwing for two touchdowns and leaving no question who the backup is.

Bagent was impressive as well, leaving Reed as the likely odd man out. Carrying four quarterbacks doesn't seem probable, and Reed's performance was unquestionably the least impressive. Still, the young quarterback did show flashes but lacked the consistency of his more experienced peers. Keenum's stint in the lineup was exciting to watch not only because of the scores, but for what it means for Williams.

Bears Quarterback Case Keenum Wastes no Time Making Impression

Many Bears fans will remember the former rival quarterback from his time with the Minnesota Vikings. While it was Stefon Diggs who made the play, Keenum was the quarterback who set up the "Minnesota Miracle." The veteran has a long resume, filling a myriad of roles in his career.

This experience is vital as Johnson attempts to take the next step as a head coach and Williams continues his development. Having the quarterback around the offense gives leadership and the ability to see things that less experienced eyes might miss. Keenum's role on this team isn't just as a secondary option, but a calming voice and leader on the sidelines and in the locker room.

Johnson talked Keenum out of retirement for this very reason, and the quarterback is making the absolute most out of the opportunity. Keenum looked like a top backup or bottom-of-the-league starter in his Chicago debut. Previously, Keenum has spent time with the Texans, Rams, Vikings, Broncos, Commanders, Browns, and Bills.

Both the Texans and Rams would bring Keenum back, with Houston having Keenum on the roster three separate times. The journeyman quarterback unquestionably brings experience that the Bears have every reason to continue to believe will help fuel a turnaround.
