Michael Conforto sent Wrigley Field into chaos on Monday night, launching a walk off home run in the ninth to push the Cubs’ home win streak to 12 games. The Cubs start the series against the Reds on a high. The Cubs continue their reign of home dominance following a three run homer from Suzuki, and and a bottom of the ninth sacrifice fly between Nico Hoerner and Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Cabrera steadies the game after early damage

The Cubs have been exemplary at home, particularly when it comes to pitching late in the game. Edward Cabrera threw for six innings allowing only three runs and striking out eight.

Those eight strikeouts are the biggest kicker here, where Cabrera directly kept the Cubs within striking distance. Cabrera may have given up nine hits, but it was only two of them that did any real damage. It's worth emphasizing that even when the game fell behind to 3-0, Cabrera didn't panic, and didn't let the game slip from his grasp. Base runners aren't ideal, but they can be harmless when managed correctly.

The north siders worked as a team to make it happen, entering the ninth with a one run deficit. Hoerner's sacrifice fly ball set the stage for PCA to tag up and tie the game. Conforto entered the game as a pinch hitter. This just goes to show how even the slightest contribution from any team member can have the largest impact.

The Cubs didn’t play a perfect game, and it didn’t need to be. They hung around, took their shots when they had them, and trusted someone would come through. That’s exactly what happened. Conforto’s swing ends it, but this was built long before that moment ever showed up.

Cabrera kept it close, the lineup scratched back into it, and they gave themselves a chance late. That’s been the formula at Wrigley all year. Twelve straight at home isn’t luck, it’s a reflection of a team that knows how to finish games when it matters most.
