Matt Eberflus Puts Bears Coach on Chopping Block After Week 12 Mishaps
The Chicago Bears' special teams started the season as one of the bright spots on the team. In Week 1, this group help Chicago beat the Tennessee Titans. Since then, this unit has done a good job of keeping the Bears in games.
Unfortunately, in the past two weeks, the Bears special teams' has made some major blunders. In Week 11, the special teams unit allowed the Packers to block Cairo Santos's game-winning field goal attempt.
Then, this past week against the Minnesota Vikings, special teams allowed another field goal to be blocked. Although the blocked field goal against the Vikings happened in the first half, not scoring the points came back to cost the Bears a victory.
If that wasn't bad enough, special teams also muffed a punt against the Vikings, leading to a Minnesota touchdown and a 24-10 deficit.
After the loss, head coach Matt Eberflus was asked if he would be more involved in special teams this upcoming week.
According to ESPN;s Courtney Cronin, Eberflus will be more involved in the special teams this week.
Eberflus being more involved with the special teams unit this week is both good and bad. Clearly the Bears need to make adjustments so these blunders don't happen the rest of the season, and the head coach being a part of the solution is typically a good idea.
This does put ST coordinator Richard Hightower in a tricky position, however. His unit has directly played a role in two straight losses, and the lack of execution here reflects poorly on the coach who's directly overseeing this group. Considering Eberflus has already made one firing, Hightower should view this as a warning to either step up or prepare to ship out.
With Eberflus being more involved in special teams this week, fans have every right to worry about the rest of the gameplan. Although no one expects the Bears to win, fans are hoping to not to embarrassed on Thanksgiving day and that could definitely happen now.
