The Chicago Bears' offensive line has been an issue for a long time now. This season, it's looked particularly horrid. Improvements must be made but unfortunately, one perfect offseason target might now be too expensive.

General manager Ryan Poles is expected to replace four offensive linemen this offseason. Luckily, Trey Smith, one of the best right guards in the NFL for the Chiefs, will be a free agent. That said, it has been reported multiple times that Smith will likely reset the market at guard.

Bears News: Trey Smith looking to reset the guard market

This comes as no surprise. Smith has been one of the best guards since entering the league in 2021. In four seasons, the former sixth-round pick has only allowed eight sacks, 20 QB hits, 112 QB hurries, and 140 QB pressures, according to PFF. Additionally, Smith has never finished a season with an overall grade lower than a 70 from PFF.

Smith's dominant presence is desperately needed in this offensive line room. Despite that, questions remain on whether Poles and team owner Geroge McCaskey will fork out the big buck for a player like this.

Last offseason, the Bears were in early talks with Saqoun Barkley but the paycheck got " too rich" and the Bears backed out. Look at how that's working for them now, Barkley is having the best season of his career while their singing D'Andre Swift struggles with ball carrier vision sometimes.

According to PFF, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has been sacked 58 times and pressured 191 times. On top of that, Williams has been hit an unfathomable amount of time while in the pocket.

The Bears absolutely can't miss on signing Smith this offseason. There is no price that is too steep to protect Williams, the franchise quarterback.

Smith would be the perfect way to start the offensive line rebuild that will continue in the 2025 NFL draft, so here's hoping the organization is willing to pay what he's worth.
