The Chicago Bears topped the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in a game that came much closer to the wire than it should have. The Bears came out of the gate quickly, posting 14 points in the first quarter alone. Luther Burden III led the team with a perfect 8 receptions on 8 targets compiling a total of 95 yards.

Burden has spent the past week hearing about what he said prior to the Green Bay game. Micah Parsons dismissed the talked, and the only defense Burden could have was his team-leading 47 yards on only 6 targets.

In Atlanta, the conversation earned a better foundation. It's not every day that a receiver catches everything thrown at him. It was his season high in both receptions and total yards.

The targets were never the problem

Burden has gotten targets steadily all season long, and that should be so. Prior to the start of the season, and to date, many fans and pundits alike engaged in debates on whether Burden or Rome Odunze would serve as the top receiver for the Bears.

Chicago's first possession showed why things felt different this time. Facing a third and 17, Williams found Odunze for 23 yards. Williams then connected with Burden to add on another 25 yards, only for Colston Loveland to finish the drive with a touchdown. It was clear that Williams' return had an impact on the Bears offense, but he consistently trusted Burden, and a perfect 8 for 8 shows why.

This was still not the explosive version of Burden we saw in 2025. Despite a good performance from him, he didn't collect any touchdowns, and his average of yards per reception was 11.9, only .3 yards more than his season average of 11.6 yards per catch.

But reliability has quite a lot of influence in this offense, particularly when it's present to help a returning quarterback to ease himself back into the flow of things. A single afternoon from Burden doesn't cement his status as the Bears' WR1, but it definitely helps.

With the Bears on a short week as they look toward Thursday against the New England Patriots, they're going to need all of the reliability they can get. If Burden leads the Bears in targets again, Atlanta will look less like an outlier, and more like the start of the Bears depth chart changing.
