Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams took the podium ahead of Week 6 to answer questions and most importantly deal with the injury critiques that have lingered. A big piece of why Williams has been attacked is a level of toxicity that equates the quarterback showing emotion with a lack of toughness. Those who has played with Williams clearly never broach this subject leaving it to rival fans and pundits looking for attention to direct heat at the quarterback simply for showing emotion.
When asked about the situation, the quarterback focused on his teammates and why it was important to get back on the field. However, the second piece of this is the undeniable fact that his character has been attacked due simply to being open with his emotions. When asked about this, Williams was straightforward with his response, coming via Chicago's FOX reporter Devan Kaney.
"I mean my character has been attacked since - for a while…it’s just another motivating factor for when I get out there and get going again"Caleb Williams
Williams isn't playing into the hands of the media not responding to the low blows, but stating the obvious. Chicago fans are coming to understand exactly what Sooner and Trojans fans did at the college level. Due to Williams painting his nails and refusing to hide his emotions there is a consistent attack on a player who undeniably is becoming one of the faces of the league.
The quarterback isn't being judged for his play or off-the-field choices, but simply a personality fans or pundits are judging of not fitting of leadership. Nevermind that every step of the quarterback's career this has been disproven as well as the clear defense and love that Williams inspires from his teammates. It is an example of the worst type of narrative thriving simply because it is an easy take.
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams dealing with character questions continues frustrating career theme
Williams has continued to deal with this perfectly not hesitating to call it out without coming across as if he is looking for sympathy. It is a difficult balance and has to be incredibly difficult for Williams to shoulder along with the typical responsibilities of being a franchise quarterback. It will be interesting to watch whether this narrative continues or if the league makes a move to embrace a clear face.
The quarterback is an incredibly talented starter for a historical franchise and should be dealing with being pushed to make his return not character questions. Emotion showing through when Williams is upset he isn't being able to be present for his teammates along with dealing with a clear level of pain should never open up a player to this level of heat.
Chicago has made their outlook clear on Williams with both coaches and players speaking out in defense of their quarterback. This needs to be a continued theme as the hope remains that Williams won't take it to heart but can harness this frustration. It seems the direction we are heading and speaks to the greatness of a quarterback that is going to enjoy proving a lot of fans and pundits wrong.
