The Chicago Bears had a shocking leading receiver on Sunday, with Kalif Raymond leading the way with nine targets and eight catches for 84 yards and a handful of big moments. Before this turned into a blowout victory, the Carolina Panthers were trading blows with the offensive heavyweight, and it was Raymond who consistently came up with plays when it seemed that Chicago needed it most. While this is great news for the offense and a roster with clear depth concerns at the position heading into the year, it isn't great for Zavion Thomas.
Thomas is a rookie and was always going to have an uphill battle to be a consistent target. However, there was a belief after a strong camp and preseason that perhaps the receiver had worked his way into a more consistent role. An injury derailed this and left his role as a clear question mark before Sunday's performance made it clear that Raymond should be favored as the team's third option.
Not only did Raymond produce an incredible afternoon, but depth receiver Jahdae Walker played 34 snaps and caught a touchdown while showing incredible effort as a blocker and clearly having the trust of head coach Ben Johnson. Even when Thomas is fully healthy there is reason to wonder whether or not the rookie is going to have any type of meaningful role.
It is a great problem to have and Johnson's trust in Raymond showed up consistently on Sunday as well as a surprising level of chemistry with Caleb Williams. While these type of numbers shouldn't be the expectation moving forward, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Raymond continue to be a surprise piece in Chicago's system.

The reason why Raymond enjoyed such a big day in Chicago's offense was due to Carolina focusing the best secondary pieces on Luther Burden and Rome Odunze. This is going to be an issue that continually happens in the 2026 season and Sunday proved that the team's third option is more than capable of taking care of business when forced into a featured role.
For Thomas, there is still plenty of time to develop within Johnson's system and injuries can still open the door to what could be a more meaningful role. Still, there is no way around the fact that Sunday made it clear that playing meaningful snaps is going to be extremely difficult for the rookie in the 2026 season.
Chicago has a great problem to have with both Walker and Raymond playing beyond expectations and both star receivers just scratching the surface of what they could accomplish.
