The Chicago Bears made notable changes to the receiver room this past offseason, parting ways with veteran depth and star pass catcher DJ Moore. The notable additions included rookie Zavion Thomas and veteran Kalif Raymond. Raymond was especially notable based on his experience with Ben Johnson when the head coach was the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Throughout Raymond's career in Detroit, the pass catcher filled a myriad of roles, and that appears to be the same expectation in Chicago.
Raymond recently spoke with FOX reporter Devan Kaney, who offered that "Kalif Raymond said he wants to be like a piece of clay, moldable and able to fit wherever the Bears need him to." This is an extremely telling sentiment and suggests that Raymond isn't going to be blocking Chicago's young pass catchers from snaps, but embracing any role that Johnson asked of him.
It is a rarity to find an accomplished player who is so openly saying he wants to do anything that it takes to win. Raymond's want to help the Bears reach the ultimate goal is clear, and that is a common refrain all over the roster. With this in mind, Johnson has several possibilities when it comes to managing snaps for Raymond.
Kalif Raymond Embracing Best Possible Outlook as Bears Regular Season Nears
If Thomas and Jahdae Walker both take a huge leap this season, you could see Raymond transition into a special teams contributor and depth role. Just as likely is watching the veteran serve as the third starting receiver and become an underrated security blanket for Caleb Williams. The ability is clearly present; the only question is what is going to bring out the best version of the Chicago roster.
Raymond being so willing to accept any role and having complete trust in Johnson speaks to the culture the Bears continue to build. The ultimate goal remains the focus, and Johnson has a way of getting players to buy into this, with Cole Kmet serving as another recent example, giving up production in favor of having a better chance to win it all.
It will be interesting to watch at the start of the season how Raymond's snaps are managed and whether or not the clear camp chemistry can translate into early-season production. Production that won't lock in any specific role as Chicago and Raymond are both making it clear that the upcoming season will be approached with an open mind and understanding whatever moves are needed will be embraced.
