It's been two years since Justin Fields last played a snap for the Chicago Bears. He went 11-29 as a starter in the Windy City, and while he showed flashes of great play and wasn't entirely to blame for the team's struggles, he wasn't good enough to be the face of the team.
Fast forward to today, and he hasn't improved much. This time, however, his never-ending struggles might actually help his former team for a change, as with his team falling to 0-6, they might be more open to trading Breece Hall.
Jets' Loss Opens Door For Bears And Breece Hall
Fields just had one of the worst games of his career, which is a lot to say, given how low the bar was. He completed 9 of 17 passes for 45 yards, adding seven carries for 31 yards. The Jets had -10 passing yards and 82 total yards of offense. Head coach Aaron Glenn didn't trust him to make plays down the field, and it was hard to blame him.
Now, the Jets continue to be the only winless team in the league, and with the No. 1 pick zooming in, they might be better off parting ways with veterans. Breece Hall hasn't gotten a contract extension yet, and given his age and talent, he might be the team's most valuable trade asset right now.
He carried the rock 22 times for 59 yards in the loss to the Denver Broncos, and he's now up to 410 rushing yards on 88 carries for the season. He has yet to score once, but he's added 17 receptions for 24 targets for 150 receiving yards.
The Bears' running game has been a concern this season. They average just 102.3 rushing yards per game, the eighth-lowest figure in the league, and some believe it's time to move on from D'Andre Swift, who's averaging a pedestrian 3.34 rushing yards per carry.
Swift, who has never been a high-end starter, is up to just 187 rushing yards on 56 carries. Rookie Kyle Monangai hasn't been much of a factor, and the Bears have yet to feature another ball-carrier in the Ben Johnson era.
Long gone are the days in which Bears fans hoped that Justin Fields' play would lead them to the mountaintop. Now, all these years later, his inability to read a defense and his poor passing skills might finally give the Bears the missing piece they need to get to the next level.
