One of the bigger question marks the Chicago Bears are dealing with in the 2026 offseason is how they will fill out the depth chart at linebacker.

With expected cuts and potential targets, there has been no shortage of speculation surrounding the Bears' LB situation just days before free agency. Now, there is another potential target that could help turn the position around, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on a surprise release on Wednesday.

"Sources: The Giants have informed LB and defensive captain Bobby Okereke that he will be released.

The team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year amassed 385 tackles in 3 seasons with the Giants (143 last season), but now will get a head start on free agency. Okereke was entering the final year of a 4-year $40M contract and was due to make $9M."

Okereke isn't just the aggressive tackling production, but a clear positive presence off the field and in the locker room. It is hard to see a more obvious fit for the Bears, with free agency buzz heating up, giving general manager Ryan Poles a new potential target to consider next week.

Bobby Okereke Could Be on Bears' Radar When Free Agency Opens

Okereke is coming off a season where he had 103 total tackles as well as 10 pressures. Even in a defense with extremely limited help, the veteran LB still put up strong numbers. It is easy to imagine how joining defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's unit could improve on that production.

Okereke spent the first four years of his career with the Indianapolis Colts before joining the New York Giants for the last three seasons. Signing with Chicago would be the first real chance of his career to play in a situation where there are valid Super Bowl aspirations.

He'd be joining a Bears defense that includes impact players like T.J. Edwards, Montez Sweat, Grady Jarrett, and Austin Booker. Chicago was already decent in the trenches and up the middle, and adding Okereke to the mix could take that success to new heights.

Signing Okereke wouldn't completely solve the Bears' LB needs, but it could be the first step towards a solution. A veteran signing like that, combined with spending draft capital on linebacker, could be a potential solution, especially if the Bears wish to allocate funds elsewhere.

Already, the Bears have an incredible offensive roster, now needing to build a defensive unit capable of balancing things out. Signing Okereke is a step in that direction, giving Chicago a clear presence in the middle of the field, as well as an occasional blitzer to help Allen's unit, making a name worth tracking when the free agency tampering period starts on Monday.
