The Chicago Bears clearly need to invest in a more consistent source of pass rush behind currently suspended Montez Sweat. While the veteran is getting ready to make his return, there is a clear need to bring in additional depth options or even explore adding a star at the position. However, if the Bears prefer to add a cheap depth piece, current Miami Dolphins defender Joshua Uche makes a great deal of sense.
Uche has a lone sack on the season to go along with a forced fumble and 10 pressures so far this season. The numbers are far from elite, but Uche would be a cheap addition and highly valued in Dennis Allen's system. The idea here isn't adding a star, but a player capable of having a positive impact and showing up in a handful of key moments without costing the franchise a high round draft pick.
For Uche, the sell should be easy when looking at Miami's miserable season and considering the clear chance to play meaningful snaps for Chicago. It is a chance to jump from a sinking ship to a team clearly starting to be established as a Super Bowl contender. One that Uche could help fuel if he were able to turn the clock back just a bit.
Looking back at the 2022 season with the New England Patriots, Uche was far more than a rotational edge rusher offering 11.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. While it has been the outlier in what is otherwise an average career, there is always the wildcard chance of Uche discovering this form once again in Allen's defense.
Bears would be wise to explore trade for current Miami Dolphins pass rusher Joshua Uche
Chicago could send a late day three pick for Uche and expect a deal to get done and have a chance to improve your pass rush. Adding the defender isn't just about the possible impact, but an insurance policy that gives you an option to lean on if the Bears were to chase a star and be unable to land the plane.
There is also the scenario of betting on the creativity of Allen to generate a pass rush and refusing to bring in a high priced veteran who doesn't fit your timeline of contention. Regardless of where the front office may land, bringing in Uche can only help you and do so for pick that would likely be spent on a lesser depth piece.
Putting it simply, there isn't a downside to adding an established defender more than capable of adding to a pass rush in a secondary role. Handing you needed depth as well as a possible wildcard you can hope finds a way back to his 2022 form.
