It Only Took Half a Season for Former Bears Coach to Lose His Job
Last season, under offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, the Chicago Bears offense struggled to find success. While Getsy led the Bears to the second-best rushing offense with 2,399 yards, they had the 27th-ranked passing attack with 3,421 passing yards. Moreover, Getsy's offense ranked 18th in points per game with 21.2.
Getsy's passing attack with the Bears mainly focused on wide receiver screens and quick game, which then-quarterback Justin Fields struggled with. Although Getsy's game plans were predictable, Fields' struggles didn't help either.
Even though the Bears run game was great under Getsy, the offense as a whole didn't measure up. Ultimately, this led to Getsy getting fired by the Bears during the 2024 offseason.
Despite how poor Getsy's offense was with the Bears, the Las Vegas Raiders offered him their offensive coordinator position. Getsy's landing with the Raiders was a chance for him to show that his failures in Chicago were more about the quarterback than his scheme.
Unfortunately for Getsy, the Raiders offense has struggled through the first nine weeks of the season. Currently, the Raiders have the 13th-ranked passing attack with 2,030 passing yards and the 31st-ranked rushing attack with 692 yards. The Raiders offense also only averages 18.7 points, which is 26th in the NFL.
The Raiders' lackluster offense so far this season led to Getsy and the staff getting fired Monday morning, according to Adam Schefter.
Getsy's firing comes as no surprise to the Bears fans who watched him struggle for two seasons in Chicago. Nonetheless, it can be argued the talent Getsy had in Las Vegas was slightly worse than what he had last season with the Bears.
Entering this season, the Raiders quarterback room consisted of veteran Gardner Minshew and second-year quarterback Aidan O'Connell. Though Minshew has shown he can be a solid NFL quarterback, he's not a franchise guy, and O'Connell has struggled throughout his young career.
The Raiders receiving corps to start the season consisted of a disgruntled DaVante Adams, a solid target in Jakobi Myers, and a young star at tight end, Brock Bowers. At running back, they didn't have a difference-maker, which is why they have struggled on the ground all season.
Given these factors, it's easy to see why Getsy failed with the Raiders. Still, anyone who watched Getsy with the Bears could have seen this coming.
Getsy's failure in Las Vegas might end his offensive coordinating days at the NFL level.
