The Chicago Bears have had an interesting offseason when it comes to takes swirling around Caleb Williams. Some pundits have pointed to the quarterback's completion percentage, arguing that the third-year starter is far from an elite starting option. Other takes have pointed to the signal-caller as a top-five option and clearly ascending to a level that few are capable of reaching. Chicago fans are tired of the noise and ready to see the quarterback realize elite potential and the 2026 season to finally begin.

Still, it is nice to see a rational take on the current situation, understanding both the talent and the growth that is needed. Former Pro Bowl defender Gerald McCoy stepped in to provide the needed balance to the current discussion, with BearsTalk providing a quote that is right on the money.

"“Caleb is immensely talented, he’s almost overly-talented, what he can do throwing a football and what he can do with his legs. As soon as he gets to the point where he can relax and learn how to simplify the game, Caleb Williams will be the best quarterback in the NFL. Yes, I just said it. He’s that talented.”"

McCoy is hitting this perfectly, not denying the clear improvements that Williams needs to make while still celebrating the talent. This is where the discussion should be for those paying attention to what is actually happening in Chicago. McCoy isn't attempting a hot take but is pointing out the obvious that there is consistency needed to capture talent that would push Williams quickly to becoming the league's best.

Former Star Defender Provides Perfect Balance to Current Bears Discourse

McCoy was last in the league in the 2021 season before turning to giving his own takes. As is often the case, having been so recently removed from the game, there is a perspective that many pundits are lacking when talking about players or what needs to be accomplished. McCoy is showing awareness of understanding the clear need to improve while pointing to the potential to be the league's best.

Any reasonable pundit reaches this conclusions and Chicago fans can't help but appreciate the breath of fresh air that is this take. With that said, a lot of the recent debate has simply been born out of boredom, as we are in the longest stretch of the offseason.

It makes sense that the up-and-down coverage around Williams has been so inconsistent when you consider this and realize we are simply too far removed from playing meaningful reps. This will soon change with the end of the month bringing training camp and a chance for McCoy's take to begin to age as well as Bears fans expect.
