Former Bears Head Coach Seeking New Job With NFC Rival for 2025 Season
By Cem Yolbulan
The Chicago Bears had one of their most disappointing seasons in recent franchise history. Despite starting the campaign with postseason aspirations, things went south very quickly as the Bears lost ten straight games at one point to finish the season 5-12. In the midst of the losing streak, Chicago parted ways with Matt Eberflus, making him the first head coach in Bears history to be fired mid-season.
At the time of the firing, the Bears were 4-8 under Eberflus. In the 2.5 seasons he was in charge, the Bears were 14-32, making them one of the least successful organizations in that span.
Despite all of this, Eberflus is still getting plenty of attention in the coaching market. His name is regularly speculated with defensive coordinator openings and he most recently interviewed with the Falcons DC vacancy, per Bears insider Courtney Cronin.
NFL News: Matt Eberflus Interviews for Falcons Defensive Coordinator Role
The Falcons were similarly disappointing last season, finishing 8-9 and missing the playoffs for the seventh straight season. Their defense took a significant step back and finished as a bottom-ten defensive unit in the NFL, leading to the firing of Jimmy Lake.
Even though he failed miserably as a head coach, Eberflus has a ton of experience as a defensive coordinator. He has enjoyed NFL success in that role prior to arriving in Chicago. When Eberflus was the defensive coordinator for the Colts, they had a top-ten defense in three of his four seasons there. Indianapolis exceeded expectations during that span, finishing with a winning record in three of those campaigns.
Eberflus certainly needs to prove himself again in a coordinator role before getting head coaching offers. How the rest of his career will proceed will be fascinating to watch for Bears fans.
