It isn't a secret that the Chicago Bears are facing major depth questions at the receiver position as the 2026 offseason winds to a close. Free agency losses of Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay weren't incredibly notable, but did hurt the team's depth. This is especially the case after DJ Moore was traded to the Buffalo Bills and made it clear that Chicago is potentially one injury or underperforming starter away from having a real problem. This goes a long way in explaining why veteran Scotty Miller will be given a weekend tryout with the Bears.

Head coach Ben Johnson called the tryout “intriguing," according to CHGO Bears host Adam Hoge. It is understandable that it would catch the attention of Johnson based on Miller's speed and the hope that the veteran can find a way to utilize this within the Chicago offense.

Miller has had 62 and 69 receiving yards the past two seasons and been a forgotten piece of the Pittsburgh Steelers offense. However, there is a history of the sixth-round selection being a productive player, with Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Bucs allowing Miller to produce 501 yards and a trio of touchdowns back in the 2020 season.

This is the version of the receiver that Johnson would love to find and offer Caleb Williams an occasional deep threat. While it is years in the rearview, Brady utilized Miller's ability to get lost behind the defense in a huge spot. In the 2020 NFC Championship game with the clock running down, Brady threw a perfect sideline pass to Miller, who raced in for the touchdown to give the Bucs control.

Bears Giving Veteran Receiver Scotty Miller Surprise Opportunity Late in 2026 Season

Even half a decade later, it is clear that Miller still has this level of speed, and a great quarterback can find a way to get production from the receiver. For Miller, the opportunity is incredible with the chance to breathe life back into his career and join a Chicago roster that clearly should be considered among the NFC's top threats.

The opportunity is clear with the weekend being a big moment for a receiver who is quickly running out of options after two underwhelming seasons with Pittsburgh. It doesn't matter whether it is the fault of the receiver or a limited Steelers offense; the resume remains underwhelming and makes it clear why this is such an important weekend if his career is going to continue.

For Chicago, it is a chance to add a bit of experience to the bottom of your depth chart and offer Williams an occasional speed threat to utilize. Even if Miller is unable to make the final roster, it could make sense to bring in the experience to push the team's younger players. It is at least a potential fit to keep a close eye on in the coming days as Chicago makes its decision.
