Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears have been hard at work putting together a staff of both young and experienced coaches. One of the more notable hires is running back coach Eric Bieniemy, the second-most experienced coach Johnson brought in. Bieniemy has been coaching since 2000, spending 14 seasons in the NFL and eight seasons in college.

That said, Bieniemy's most memorable coaching tenure came as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator from 2018-2022. During that time, Bieniemy coached right guard Trey Smith, who is likely to hit free agency this offseason.

On Monday, during the opening night of Super Bowl week, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times spoke to Smith about the potential of him hitting free agency and what Bieniemy will bring to Chicago.

Trey Smith Gives Glowing Endorsement of Eric Bieniemy

"Energy. Juice. Discipline, man. EB’s gonna bring it every single time. I’ve got nothing but love and respect for EB and who he is as a coach and a person. I love him and his family. EB is gonna bring that juice every single day. He holds you to a different standard. A lot of players shy away from it. But that’s EB. He just wants the best out of you. He wants the best for you and he’s gonna push you further than you think you can be pushed."

Trey Smith

Smith's comments on Bieniemy's coaching style should excite Bears fans. Last season, players were begging to be coached hard and for the coaches to possess accountability. From Smith's account of Bieniemy, that sounds like that's exactly the type of coach he is.

Although some of Bieniemy's past players have not loved his coaching style, Smith clearly did. That goes to show not every player responds the same way to his style of coaching. Even so, Bears players were begging for a coach of his ilk, so now that they have him, no one should complain.

Nevertheless, Bieneiemy should bring the culture shock that the Bears organization needs.
