On paper, new head coach Ben Johnson made massive improvements to the Chicago Bears roster through trades and free agency, and the draft still looms. Alongside Johnson, general manager Ryan Poles helped rebuild the trenches and added valuable skills to the position of players.
Chicago added Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay. Zaccheaus is currently the leading candidate for WR No.3, while Duvernay's main duty will be returning punts. He may also be sprinkled in as a receiver. Still, the Bears need a few more training camp bodies in that receiving room.
That said, there is one former Bear who has been on the team's practice squad since 2021 that remains available, Nsimba Webster. Webster rejoining the Bears under a new coaching staff could be an interesting proposition.
Will the Bears Bring Nsimba Webster Back for Training Camp?
The 29-year-old entered the league in 2019 as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Rams. Webster spent five games on the Rams' active roster as a rookie but never saw that field. Following those five games, he spent the rest of his time on their practice squad.
The San Francisco 49ers claimed him off waivers on July 31, 2021, then waived him a month later. Since then, Webster has been on the Bears. Between 2021 and 2022, he played eight games on special teams for the franchise. He spent the rest of his time on the practice squad.
During the final game of the 2024 preseason, Webster sustained a groin injury, which placed him on injured reserve, meaning he didn't count against the Bears 2024 53-man roster. given his recent history with Chicago, it's not hard to imagine Ryan Poles trying to persuade Johnson into bringing Webster in for training camp.
Be that as it may, Johnson could target receiver depth in the draft. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if Webster ends up on the 90-man roster for training camp.
