It is hard to find much to feel happy about after an ugly Chicago Bears loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Losing in this league is inevitable but doing so in ugly fashion while seeing Caleb Williams go down was simply far too much for an excited fanbase to endure. Still, there was the undeniable bright side of defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's defense listening to his warning and putting together what was an incredible afternoon.
Ahead of Chicago's 9-6 loss Allen offered the following quote, one that clearly helped motivate a defense that played incredibly well despite taking a loss. It was awful weather and the team was put in bad situations consistently and still the Bears found a way to listen to their coordinator.
"Line up again let’s go. Week 2. We have to be man enough to admit and see where we fell short - what can we do to improve our performance and preparation. Let’s focus on playing outstanding this week."Dennis Allen
Taking the loss and losing Williams are two blows that you aren't going to recover from, and yet there is no way around how impressive the defensive effort was. Chicago was able to generate consistent pressure and limit the damage from what is an incredibly talented receiving group.
Even in a bad weather game the defensive intensity and the lack of penalties and missed assignments jumped off the screen. This is incredibly important now especially that Williams has his future in question. If the Bears are going to manage to stay relevant it will require the Bears defense consistently playing at this level.
Bears defense clearly listened to Dennis Allen and showed out in Week 2 loss
Watching the play of the secondary was what was most exciting aspect of this after watching Bryce Young light up the unit the week before. Young passed for over 300 yards and had a trio of touchdown passes without having anything close to the talent of Justin Jefferson. No question, even with the poor weather and Carson Wentz starting at quarterback this was a start that suggested Allen remains in control of the unit.
There is so much to appreciate about the veteran coordinator and one of the most obvious is his willingness to quickly pivot in any direction needed. This was on display with his clear challenge ahead of the matchup with Minnesota.
No question, in what will be a miserable week for Bears fans having this defensive effort is a needed bright spot. One that fans should attempt to give credit to even in a situation that is unquestionably maddening.
