Cubs' upcoming Mets series could decide their trade deadline plans

Chicago has little room for error as it chases the Brewers in the NL Central race.

The Cubs were rained out of their series finale against the Blue Jays after embarassing them to tie the series up. The Cubs now travel to New York to take on the Mets for a four game series. The Cubs have been riding a high on the coat tails of Pete Crow-Armstrong as he continues his career breakout season. His numbers so far in June have been record breaking, and Cub fans have never been so happy about an individual contract.

With the rain out, the Cubs will have to wait until August 6th to find out the results of this series. August may not seem so far away, but that's all the way on the other side of the All-Star break. In terms of the baseball schedule, that's a long way off.

The Cubs are running out of time to prove they're contenders

If the Cubs wish to prove anything in the NL Central, they're going to need to get on their horse. The Brewers have recently back-peddled a couple games, but in the grand scheme of things, the Cubs are still seven games back. They're still well out of contention, and the Brewers aren't the only competition in the way. They would still need to take out the Cardinals on their way as well.

Despite paying over $30 million more than any other team, the Mets sit 14.5 games out of first place. As one of the worst teams in baseball, they mark an important barrier for the Cubs. Though they've recently been improving lately, there's no denying the large questions surrounding the team right now, and I'm talking about the big one. Should the Cubs buy or sell at the deadline?

That's why the Mets are such an important series for them. With four games, it could make a meaningful swing for the Cubs if they're able to take at least three of four of them. By taking the series win from the Mets, and holding that momentum before the Cubs head up to Milwaukee to face the Brewers, the Cubs could have a real shot at moving the needle in their direction.
