The Chicago Cubs have a well-covered Dansby Swanson problem as the shortstop has been benched for a time to attempt to reset his offense. It is an understandable effort based on the fact that the Cubs simply have no other options due to a contract that offers no escape for the next three seasons. If the Cubs are going to shed the infielder, it would require another team being willing to swap bad contracts or take on the deal of Swanson in hopes of getting the best out of the veteran moving forward.
Looking around the league, it is Swanson's former team that stands out as a clear possibility. The Atlanta Braves are in the middle of a push to take the National League's top seed and have very few roster concerns. If there is an area of question, it is at shortstop, where Ha-Seong Kim has been very similar to Swanson when it comes to a lack of offensive production.
The Cubs could offer the Braves the chance to reunite with Swanson and take on the expiring contract of Kim, as well as whatever struggling pieces the Braves wish to part ways with. Atlanta would have a chance to turn back the clock, and the Cubs could wash their hands of what has been an undeniably frustrating contract.
Cubs Should Consider Braves as Potential Answer to Dansby Swanson's Woes
This isn't to say that the Braves would bite on the potential offer when you consider that the shortstop would top their current payroll. However, Atlanta does have a clear void at the position and is lacking long-term solutions while also having clearly overpaid contracts. The Cubs could simply offer to swap problems with the Braves in hopes of ridding themselves of a deal that is continuing to age poorly.
For the Braves, you're believing that a return to Atlanta is all that is needed to turn Swanson back into the player he previously was for that franchise. Atlanta can also rid itself of Kim while attaching a couple of its more frustrating contracts.
It is at least worth a phone call as the Cubs continue to look at every possible answer as to how to solve the lack of offense from the infielder. Trading Swanson is a long shot, but one that needs to be explored with the Braves serving as the best possible answer of a team that might entertain swapping problems with Chicago.
