If there is one clear area the Chicago Cubs could use reinforcement in the 2026 season, it is in the bullpen. While there are unquestionably solid options at the back of the pen, any potential postseason run is going to truly test your depth. With this in mind, the Cubs should consider the opportunity to buy low on an experienced arm that could turn into a reliable weapon. Current Tampa Bay Rays reliever Griffin Jax is expected to be dealt ahead of this year's trade deadline and isn't doing his value any favors.

The right-hander has given up eight earned runs this season in only 13 games pitched. While this obviously is far from ideal, it presents the Cubs with a chance to buy low on a player that could turn into a trusted option. Jax offered great production as recently as the 2024 season when the reliever appeared in 72 games with the Minnesota Twins and put up an ERA of 2.03, offering 10 saves on the season.

Jax is a wildcard with the skill set to be a valued back of the pen arm. This gives Chicago every reason to explore a potential trade, understanding they would be buying in on an accomplished veteran, who perhaps simply needs a change of scenery.

Looking at Tampa's perspective, the reliever has been recently exploring transitioning into a starting role for the franchise. However, the Rays have a long history of punting on veterans, no matter the team's record, making a trade a clear possibility.

Cubs Should Check in on Veteran Reliever Griffin Jax in Hopes of Buying Low

Even if Tampa's hot start to the season were to continue, there is a very real chance the franchise would still be willing to deal Jax. For the Cubs, the idea of adding a starter isn't the most pressing need, with Jax needing to stick in the bullpen in a potential trade.

Still, it would be another reason to explore the deal with Jax stretching out and offering a level of flexibility if Chicago's rotation were to need reinforcement. The Cubs could also consider utilizing Jax as an arm that consistently eats more than a single inning.

No matter how the fit was utilized, it is clear that it is a deal worth exploring if the Rays are open to dealing the veteran. It would instantly improve Chicago's pen and hand the Cubs some needed depth. The counter to this being the fact the Rays are in current contention, making a deal unlikely until we get closer to this year's trade deadline. With this in mind, Jax might not be an instant trade target, but one the franchise keeps an eye on, understanding that if there is an opportunity to buy low, the Cubs must jump.
