It seemed in many ways quite fitting that the first win of the Chicago Bears' 2025 season would be at the expense of former head coach Matt Eberflus. The author of so many painful Chicago memories having his defense completely shredded by Caleb Williams was incredibly satisfying. One could argue that the Bears did the Dallas Cowboys a favor by making it clear the franchise needs to make a move at defensive coordinator. Perhaps giving the franchise a jump on getting started on finding the best potential fits.
A firing in the next weeks wouldn't be at all surprising after a trio of ugly performances from the Dallas defense. None worse than the 4-touchdown performance from a quarterback that many former Chicago leaders took time to question. This isn't to suggest whether this critique was out of bounds or accurate, but rather pointing out why this victory was so sweet for both Chicago fans and their franchise quarterback. Williams looked the part on Sunday and terrorized a former head coach who doomed his rookie season.
Bears Have Fitting Reunion with Former Head Coach Matt Eberflus
The Bears' QB had every reason to want to make a statement in this game. No matter the facts behind the report that emerged just as the heat around Williams was building. It was the perfect revenge and reset fan and pundit expectations on what the quarterback can become. While it is important to note the incredible uphill battle the Cowboys were facing with a banged-up secondary, that doesn't take away from the excitement.
It is the first win of the season, one that fans can only hope serves as a start of a major turnaround under Ben Johnson. For Eberflus, things are a bit less hopeful with the Cowboys' defense getting dominated in each of the season's first three games. It will be interesting to see how long the franchise is willing to remain patient with the former Bears head coach.
Already, you're the talk of the league based on a decision to trade away Micah Parsons at the very last minute. Now, your defense has regressed incredibly, while the pass rush has struggled. Fair or not, Eberflus is going to take a lot of heat for this as the Cowboys' season continues to look bleaker.
With this in mind, the Cowboys really should thank the Bears for exposing what the franchise is all too aware of. Eberflus has no business calling plays for a team that has any intentions of contending in the 2025 season.
