The Chicago Bears already shook the NFL to its core by adding All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, but that doesn't mean Ryan Poles should be done making moves. If anything, he should only be getting started.
Ben Johnson's team looks like a true menace in the NFC North. That said, even the best teams can be better, and this squad is no exception to that rule. They still have some flaws, and the November 10 trade deadline gives them a big window to fix them.
That's why, with the Indianapolis Colts moving on from some of their best players, the Bears should get whoever is running them on the phone to ask how much it would take to get Charvarius Ward to Chicago.
The Chicago Bears have every reason to want to trade for Charvarius Ward
While most fans would probably rather watch the Bears go after Sauce Gardner, his partner on the boundary makes more sense. He's in the final year of his contract, and he should be a more realistic and feasible trade target.
Ward might not be in his prime anymore, but he's still one of the best in the game. This season, he's allowed just 14 receptions on 33 targets (42.4 percent) for 186 yards and zero touchdowns. Opposing quarterbacks have a 60.9 passer rating when targeting him. Yes, that's not a typo.
Injuries have often been a concern with Ward, but he's suited up and played in all eight games this season. The Colts have already traded DeForest Buckner and Quenton Nelson and will most likely give up on Josh Downs as well. Hell, even Jonathan Taylor and the aforementioned Gardner might be available at the right price.
As such, it only makes sense that they do right by their veteran. There's just no way he'll be back next season anyway, especially with a new regime and coaching staff trying to fix whatever's left of that mess.
Speaking of messes, that's what the Bears' outside cornerback room has been this season. Tyrique Stevenson has been a lost cause for years, and an alien must have abducted Jaylon Johnson and switched places with him, since he's been unplayable this season.
Rookie Malik Muhammad has looked solid more often than not, and he could slide outside when he's healthy again. The Bears' defense is better than anticipated, and watching this promising season go to waste because of their faith in Jaylon Johnson would be infuriating.
Ward is up for grabs, and he might not be hard to get.
