The Chicago Bears made a savvy trade ahead of this past week's roster deadline, parting ways with Gervon Dexter in exchange for a future fifth-round pick and corner Clark Phillips. The defensive back made Chicago's final roster and has a chance to grow into a meaningful role, escaping an organization noted for its ineptitude, not having made the playoffs or had a winning season since 2017. For Phillips, it is a chance for a needed reset and step into a clear role that will fit well within the defense of Dennis Allen.
For those fortunate enough not to have watched the Falcons, Phillips was far from perfect but offered a consistent skill set. The defender plays with a level of ferocity that never wavers and leads to attacking the football, whether it is a running back, in coverage, or attempting to help a teammate there is zero question around the motor or physicality of Phillips.
With this in mind, the Bears added the corner, understanding it is needed depth as well as a great special teams contributor. Phillips can be utilized as injury depth and a rotational piece that Chicago hopes could turn into a surprise option.
Considering the injuries that the Bears have dealt with in recent seasons in the secondary, it is very probable Phillips gets a shot at some point in the 2026 season. Considering the effort and how the corner plays, this was an underrated addition with a clear chance to help push Chicago's defense in the right direction.
Bears Added Needed Depth in Clark Phillips in Underrated Summer Deal
Phillips is going to begin the season in a special teams role, working with Allen and the Bears coaching staff to become more consistent in coverage. All of the needed tools are there, and Atlanta did offer Phillips experience in the lineup, even if it was as part of teams that were clearly far from capable units.
The Bears can work to undo this damage in hopes of finding a player capable of stepping in if an injury were to arise at the position. For Phillips, it is a chance to go from one of the league's worst situations to a historic franchise expected to defend its NFC North title.
While there may be fewer snaps early in the season, it is a better situation and offers the defensive back a chance to learn and put his career back on track. It is a clear win for both sides and a deal that has a chance to be looked back on with incredible appreciation late in the 2026 season.
