The Chicago Bears are viewed as one of the more dangerous young teams lurking in the NFL. However, there is still a lot of projection to how good the roster currently is. The upside and potential of a long list of players is massive, but none of them have shown enough yet to be league staples. That was highlighted well in CBS Sports ranking of the top 100 players by Pete Prisco.Â
Chicago Bears are underrepresented in CBS top 100 list
While any list like this can be debatable, it is mostly on the margins. The big pictur is that there were only three Bears to crack the top 100 and none of them made it into the top 50.Â
Joe Thuney led off the ranking at 55th overall. Caleb Williams was next at 70th. Then, Colston Loveland closed the list off at number 100.Â
Some of the ranking came down to positional value. For example, Thuney was the third ranked guard, behind Chris Lindstrom, at 33, and and Quenton Nelson at 38. There just were no guards in the top 30. Loveland finished fourth in the ranking at tight end.Â
Meanwhile, Williams came in as the 13th highest ranked quarterback. Interestingly enough, five quarterbacks made the top ten, and then eight were between 43 and 70. There were also six quarterbacks between 60th and 80th. So, the value of the position you played was factored, but also how far apart you set yourself at your position.Â
Still, the overall theme is that the Bears are not there yet. Williams and Thuney were no doubt additions, but the rest of the roster needs to prove more. Even Loveland barely cracked the list.Â
Montez Sweat is right on the fringe of making it on defense. Rookie Dillon Thieneman has a chance to take that step as well. If Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon can bounce back, they would also have cases for the list.Â
On offense, Rome Odunze and Luther Burden have that potential. Darnell Wright is already worthy and might be a snub on this list. This can be expected when Thieneman has not played yet, and both Burden and Loveland did not breakout until late in their rookie seasons.Â
So, the team is young and has potential. However, none of the players listed are there yet. They all need to prove something or take a step. That should be the team mentality.
