The Chicago Bears announced early in the week that it would be Tyson Bagent starting on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. It will be the second straight week that the Bears opt to start the younger backup despite the absolute clinic that Keenum put on in his start against a talented Philadelphia Eagles defense. With that said, it is important to note that two things can be true, Keenum has every reason to feel incredibly slighted, while the Bears are making an understandable decision.
Keenum is an aging veteran, who was brought in as the third option to provide a level of coaching and guidance for Caleb Williams. However, there is still reason to feel a bit slighted when we look back at what exactly Keenum accomplished and the following performance from Bagent.
Bagent finished last week's game 25/34 for 268 passing yards and zero touchdowns with a lone interception. Rewind a week before and Keenum put up 247 passing yards and a pair of passing touchdowns to go along with a rushing touchdown against what is objectively a more talented defense. No question, while the decision to put in Bagent is understandable there is a clear reason for Keenum to feel a level of frustration.
The good news for Chicago is the fact that this is even a discussion is an elite problem to have. It is a rarity to have a backup quarterback capable of finding a win, having two such options points to strong roster building and the incredible elite system of Ben Johnson.
Case Keenum has every reason to feel slighted by Bears decision to start Tyson Bagent
Keenum might be a bit less mobile, but there is vast starting experience and the upset win against the Eagles that set the tone. No question, the quarterback has every reason to feel he is deserving of another start and this is especially the case against a division rival that needs Chicago's absolute best punch to have a chance to continue to push Green Bay's season in the wrong direction.
This is again where it is important to note both what a luxury this has been as well an understandable decision to go with the younger Bagent even if it does create legitimate reason for frustration. For Chicago fans, it is nearly impossible to doubt Johnson based on how the season has gone even after the loss of Williams for an extended piece of the season.
For Keenum, there has been no outward hint of frustration, but continued support for his room pointing to the fact he is a fitting leader and the ultimate pro. Still, you cannot help but wonder what Keenum is saying to his inner circle after an epic performance against the Eagles with every reason to believe another start was earned.
