Both Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams have talked about the quarterback having more command of his offense in his second year in the system. Williams is expected to know more, and the team is putting more on his plate.

Williams opened up to Stacey Dales of NFL Network about what his increased responsibility means and how much more Johnson trusts him.

Caleb Johnson Opens Up on New Responsibility in Chicago Bears Offense

Williams noted that while Johnson usually does not make a call worth checking out of, it the quarterback does step to the line and does not like what he sees, he does have the ability to be the big eraser, as he called it.

“If it's not the coverage that we wanted, it's about being able to be the big eraser,” said Williams.

Williams noted that Johnson has given him a lot more responsibility to make the checks this year.

“Each year, or each camp and things like that, I get a little bit more information, a little bit more leeway to do things, and so this year he has given me more, and that is exciting,” said Williams.

Williams noted that he is more confident in the offense, which has led to him getting this leeway. He has shown Johnson that he knows the offense better. So, when he gets to the line of scrimmage, he is not thinking about what the play call is and what he has to do. He is thinking about what the defense is showing and how the play call can counter that.

“I can actually more or less see the coverage and not necessarily be trying to figure out my drop or thinking about my drop or not worried about the routes or things like that,” Williams said. “Just trusting the guys, knowing where they're going to be, and trying to put the ball in the right spot.”

However, Williams said that while he is being given more control to make calls at the line and make checks, he still does not have full control of the offense. Williams credits center Garrett Bradbury for helping him take strides when it comes to commanding the entire offense.

“I have small checks and things like that in the pass game,” admitted Williams. “I can change protection and things like that, but Garrett handles a lot of that.”

Jared Goff really did not take off in the Johnson system until his third or fourth season. So, Williams is not behind for only having so much control entering his second season. It was an honest admission and a good look into just how much control Williams has.

Johnson has given him trust, but the goal is to have even more ownership of the offense in 2027.
