The Chicago Bears are understandably thrilled with Case Keenum and the veteran quarterback putting on a performance that buys plenty of time for Caleb Williams to work his way back. There is no longer the level on pressure on Williams to make as quick of a return due to the confidence in Keenum and the need for Williams to return as close to fully healthy as possible. With that said, there is no denying that the franchise is missing out on history that appeared to be unavoidable.

Much has been made about the fact that Chicago has never had a quarterback pass for over 4,000 yards in a single season. Hated rivals love to point this fact out, with Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers using this as a calling card as to why their signal caller is superior.

In Ben Johnson's offense it seemed that this was destined to change in the 2026 season. The trust in Williams and the ability to hit big plays is undeniably exciting, and made it impossible to believe Williams wasn't going to end the year north of this number. Now, the injury is expected to sideline the quarterback for 3-4 weeks and it seems impossible for Williams to now reach this number.

The quarterback has 407 passing yards on the season meaning he would need just under 3,600 over the final 11 games of the season. This is working under the assumption that Williams is able to return as quickly as hoped and there aren't any setbacks or further concerns.

Bears robbed of chance at franchise history due to frustrating Caleb Williams injury

Williams would need to go on a historic run with well over 300 passing yards each game. This would seemingly mean the Bears are in shootouts constantly and not performing at the expected level defensively. No question, this is extremely unlikely, just as it seems doubtful that the run game is going to fall off enough to demand such a high volume from Williams.

It will be interesting to watch how close the quarterback can get as the frustrating number appears likely to stand for at least one additional season. It is a frustrating to let this continue to hang over a historic franchise with a quarterback more than capable of surpassing this number.

Still, it is just a matter of time until the record falls with next season or whenever Williams is next able to complete a season healthy clearly offering the Bears a chance at history that appears likely to wait at least one more season.
