The Chicago Bears lack a rich history of quarterbacks, with Caleb Williams helping expose this fact by how close he already is to ranking in the top five in both touchdowns and passing yardage. Bears pundit Jacob Infante pointed this out, looking at the touchdown and passing numbers that Williams needed to reach to be able to rank top-five all-time in Chicago history. "If Caleb Williams gets 3,127 passing yards this year, he'll already have the 5th-most yards in Bears history. If Caleb Williams throws 18 passing TDs, he'll already have the 5th-most TDs in team history. That's simultaneously great for Caleb and humiliating for the franchise lol."
It isn't a secret that Chicago's history at the position is far from impressive, with Jay Cutler remaining the most consistent in team history. Still, it isn't unrealistic to begin to realize that Williams has a chance to blow past most all of the team's historical numbers.
The Bears have often had promising quarterback prospects in the past or a roster that was simply a signal caller short of making meaningful fun. However, rarely has the team been able to pair both of these traits, and that is exactly what Williams has provided.
As long as the quarterback remains healthy, he is going to blow past the aforementioned numbers and have zero problem ranking as a top-five quarterback all-time in both categories. For the Bears, the focus is obviously winning, but having Williams set franchise records so early is fitting.
Williams Setting Franchise Record at Pace Serving as Reminder of Team's Lackluster History
Bears fans shouldn't be annoyed by the lack of history but view it as a clear opportunity to begin a new era. Williams hands the franchise the chance to dominate for years to come and set records that are going to be impossible to touch for quite some time. As lofty as this might seem for a quarterback entering year three, it is the reality of the talent and speaks to why the franchise has consistently been pointed to as a top contender.
Chicago is relying on the presence of the franchise quarterback to keep them relevant and open up what should be a wide Super Bowl window. The past quarterback frustrations shouldn't be harped on, but only give fans more reason to appreciate the history they are watching as the Williams era has begun.
The quarterback's elite arm should take away any questions that he won't age well with his scrambling ability, only adding to his elite talent. With this in mind, fans should be excited and expect the franchise record to begin to fall.
